Best Freshdesk Alternatives in 2026 - Jitbit Helpdesk

A lot of small teams got the same email from Freshworks this year: the Freshdesk free plan is ending. For many of them, it was the last straw in a slow squeeze. The free tier used to cover 10 agents, then it was cut to 2, then some features went away, and now it's gone completely. The people most annoyed by this aren't freeloaders - they liked Freshdesk, recommended it to others, and used it for exactly what it was: basic, reliable ticketing. They just don't think basic ticketing is worth $19 to $55 per agent per month, plus extra for AI. "Talk to sales, they'll give you a discount" isn't much comfort either. You shouldn't have to negotiate to keep a shared inbox with ticket numbers.

To be fair to Freshdesk, some teams who left it in the past ended up coming back and paying, because it's a good product. But if you're re-evaluating anyway, now is a good time to look around. Below are the Freshdesk alternatives worth a serious look in 2026 - free, self-hosted, and paid - with current pricing and honest downsides. One piece of advice before you start: pick two or three candidates, push 20 real tickets through each, and notice what annoys you in the first hour. That tells you more than any feature matrix.

What a 5-Agent Team Actually Pays

Most teams hit by the end of the free plan are small, so here is the monthly cost for five agents on the plan a team that size usually ends up on - the one with SLAs, automation, and decent reporting:

Tool & plan 5 agents, per month
Jitbit Company (up to 7 agents) $129 monthly, ~$108 annual, AI included
Zendesk Suite Professional $575, or $825 with Copilot
Freshdesk Pro $275, or $420 with Copilot
Help Scout Plus ~$190 annual, $225 monthly, + $0.75 per AI resolution
ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus Professional from $135
Zoho Desk Professional $115
Zammad Professional (hosted) €80, + €0.03 per AI call

Zammad and Zoho Desk are the cheapest on paper. Jitbit costs about the same once you add AI to anyone else's bill, and because the price is per team, the next two agents you hire cost nothing extra.

1. Jitbit Helpdesk

Best for: small and mid-sized support and IT teams that want a fast, uncluttered ticketing system without per-seat math.

Jitbit Helpdesk ticket list in dark mode

Jitbit is the tool we build, so read this section with that in mind. If what you liked about Freshdesk was plain, dependable ticketing, that's what Jitbit is built around. The ticket list, the reply box, and the things you use every day are in front of you, and the rest stays out of the way until you need it. Everyone at Jitbit, founders included, answers support tickets in Jitbit every day, so we feel every extra click ourselves.

Simple does not mean thin. You get:

  • Automation rules and SLAs to route, escalate, and close tickets without manual work - on every plan, not just the expensive ones
  • AI features - suggested replies from your knowledge base, ticket summaries, reply polishing, and an AI live chat that hands off to a human. Your choice of GPT, Gemini, or Claude
  • Knowledge base, customer portal, and live chat
  • Asset management, time tracking, and reporting
  • SSO, a full API, and 30+ integrations including Slack, Jira, GitHub, and Azure DevOps

Pricing: Jitbit charges per tier, not per seat - $29 to $249 a month for the whole team, with every core feature on every plan and unlimited AI credits from the Startup plan up. Annual billing takes about two months off. If you'd rather keep data on your own servers, there is also a self-hosted version with a one-time license - no subscription at all.

Switching: Jitbit can pull tickets straight from Freshdesk, so you don't have to start with an empty history. For a head-to-head breakdown, see Freshdesk vs. Jitbit.

Downsides: Jitbit isn't free, and we don't plan a free tier - we'd rather charge a small flat price and stay around than take it away later. It has no built-in call-center module or gamification, and it doesn't try to be a sales CRM.

Great ticket support system for those not needing a million whistles and bells. Easy setup and not bloated like most. 100% up time and super tech support!

Jitbit is a profitable, self-funded company - no VC, no private equity, no pressure to "monetize the free tier". Feature requests go to the people who write the code, and turnaround is often days, not quarters.

I looked at a dozen or more systems before choosing JitBit. Not only has it been a great software solution for our needs, but Max, Vlad, and the rest of the team has been very responsive and helpful whenever we needed assistance. I feel like a partner with JitBit, not just another customer.

2. Zoho Desk

Best for: very small teams that want a free plan today, and companies already running on Zoho CRM.

Zoho Desk dashboard

Zoho Desk is the most direct replacement for the old Freshdesk free plan: its free edition covers 3 agents with email ticketing. Paid plans are cheap and packed with features - multichannel ticketing, a knowledge base, workflow automation, and Zia, Zoho's AI assistant, on higher plans.

Pricing: Express $7, Standard $14, Professional $23, Enterprise $40 per agent per month on annual billing, and noticeably more on monthly billing. Free for up to 3 agents.

Downsides: the interface is busy, and configuring it can feel like working through the Zoho ecosystem rather than just setting up a helpdesk. And a free plan that exists today can shrink tomorrow - ask anyone who was on Freshdesk's. More in our Zoho Desk alternative write-up.

3. Help Scout

Best for: email-first teams that want support to feel like a well-organized shared inbox.

Help Scout shared inbox

Help Scout is one of the nicest tools to use every day. Customers get what looks like a normal email instead of a "ticket #48213 has been updated" notice, and agents get a clean, quick UI. The free plan covers up to 5 users with one inbox and one help center, which is more generous than what Freshdesk offered at the end.

Pricing: Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user per month, 16% off on annual billing. Extra inboxes cost $10-12 a month each. AI Answers is billed at $0.75 for each conversation it resolves.

Downsides: it's a shared inbox, not a full service desk - no asset management, and SLAs are limited on lower plans. Per-resolution AI billing makes costs harder to predict. See our Help Scout alternative page for the details.

4. Zendesk

Best for: larger support organizations that need every channel, deep customization, and a huge app marketplace.

Zendesk agent workspace

Zendesk is the default enterprise choice and the product Freshdesk was originally built to undercut. It can do almost anything, and if you're planning to grow a big multichannel support team, it will scale with you.

Pricing: Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 per agent per month on annual billing. Copilot adds $50 per agent, and AI agent resolutions are metered on top.

Downsides: if Freshdesk's prices pushed you away, Zendesk will push harder - it costs about twice as much per agent, and it feels heavy for a small team. Our Zendesk alternatives guide and Zendesk vs. Jitbit comparison go into more detail.

5. Zammad

Best for: IT teams comfortable running their own servers who want a free, open-source helpdesk.

Zammad agent interface in dark mode

Zammad is the most popular open-source pick among sysadmins, and for good reason: it's modern, actively developed, and the self-hosted version is free with no agent limit. It handles email, web forms, chat, and more, with SLAs, a knowledge base, and a clean agent UI. If you don't want to host it, Zammad also sells a hosted version.

Pricing: self-hosted is free. Hosted plans are Starter €7 (up to 5 agents), Professional €16, and Plus €25 per agent per month on annual billing. AI features cost €0.03 per call. Paid support for self-hosted installs starts at €2,999 a year.

Downsides: "free" means you are responsible for installation, updates, backups, and uptime. Somebody on the team ends up owning the helpdesk server, and that time isn't free. If you want self-hosting with a vendor behind it, look at Jitbit's on-premise version instead.

6. ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus

Best for: internal IT departments that want ITIL processes and asset management.

ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus reporting dashboard

ServiceDesk Plus is a proper IT service management tool: incidents, problems, changes, a service catalog, CMDB, and asset management. The Standard edition is free for up to 5 technicians, which makes it a popular landing spot for IT teams leaving Freshdesk's free plan. It's available both in the cloud and on-premises.

Pricing: Standard from $13, Professional (adds asset management) from $27, Enterprise from $67 per technician per month. Many ITIL modules are add-ons at $1,195-2,395 a year each. Free Standard edition for up to 5 technicians.

Downsides: it's built for IT, and it shows - the interface is dense, setup takes a while, and it's a poor fit for customer-facing support. The pricing page says "starts at" for a reason: add-ons and asset counts push the real number up.

How to Choose

Start from how you actually used Freshdesk, not from the longest feature list:

  • Must be free, and you're 3-5 agents? Zoho Desk, Help Scout, or ManageEngine's free edition. Just keep in mind that free tiers are exactly what vendors cut first.
  • Happy to run your own server? Zammad if you want free and don't mind owning it. Jitbit's self-hosted version if you want a one-time license and vendor support.
  • Mostly email with customers? Jitbit or Help Scout.
  • Internal IT with ITIL processes? ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus. For a lighter IT helpdesk with asset tracking, Jitbit.
  • Colleagues who pitch in only occasionally? Per-seat pricing punishes this. Flat tier pricing like Jitbit's doesn't.
  • Big, multichannel, and budget isn't the problem? Zendesk.

If the free plan was the only reason you used Freshdesk, a free alternative may do. If you're going to pay for a helpdesk anyway, pay for one with a price that doesn't grow every time you add a person.

If that sounds like you, start a free Jitbit trial - no credit card required - and import your Freshdesk tickets on day one to test it with real data. If you need more time to evaluate, we're happy to extend the trial.
